and start with the first true simple declarative sentence I had written.

When writing a novel a writer should create living people;
people, not characters. A character is a caricature.

Write the best story that you can and write it as straight as you can.

We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.

The past two mornings started as they always do: reading the news. The veer from the usual was the immediate emails and phone calls made to learn if everyone in many families on the other side of the world, and in our own backyard, were all right. The fires in Australia are horrendous. The school shooting in Santa Clarita: an abomination. What we tend to forget when we read or hear the daily news is that lives of people who love each other are tied up in every story (perhaps excepting politics), and all too frequently, there is not a happy outcome.

For years, we have maintained that the reason Romance sells the most books in the marketplace is that the fantasy fulfillment of an “earned” love leading to a happily ever after is the most rewarding story told. Typically, in this space you’d be encouraged to translate the emotions generated by these horrible news stories into fodder for your H/H and their journeys. Today. No.

Today, let’s embrace gratitude as attitude. Thankfulness as the way we conduct ourselves when no one is looking. Life is fraught with difficult and complicated. Be nice often. Smile and say hello. Hug your loved ones. Reach out to those in need. Be your best you.
